Review: Master’s Boys 1-7 by Patricia Logan

3 stars

Patricia Logan has an apparent respect for the BDSM community that comes across in her explanations and general presentation of the lifestyle in her Master’s Boys series. This, in itself, is something that I truly appreciate, even if I do not necessarily agree with all aspects of the portrayal in her series. Sometimes things can come across a bit stereotypical rather than real or organic. I can excuse this because safe, sane, and consensual is something far more important to get right. Logan makes an obvious effort to do so throughout the series.

I find Logan’s characters to be intriguing overall. She tends to have decently developed back stories for each of them, and does allow the characters to have multi-dimensional personalities.

The weak point to the series, I feel, is the formulaic nature in which the stories are written. Each sub finds his dom, more or less, and goes through their scenes to defeat an internal doubt or fear or some other character growth. Happy endings ensue. While I did enjoy the series, this prevented me from establishing more emotional investment in the content.

The final book, Secrets, is an interview type review of the other six books complete with author character thrown in. This sort of thing, in my opinion, is best left to blog posts rather than a book.

I would not hesitate to read other work of Logan’s in the future.
